MEDIA RELATIONS

The governing board respects the public's right to information and recognizes that the media significantly influences the public's understanding of school issues and can greatly assist the district in informing the community about school programs and issues. Media representatives are welcome at all board meetings and shall receive meeting announcements and agendas upon request.

The Public Information Officer shall coordinate the release of information concerning the district and the actions of the board. The school principal or designee may provide the media with information relating to his or her school.

All media inquiries shall be routed to the Public Information Officer. Spokespersons designated to speak to the media on behalf of the district include the Superintendent or the Public Information Officer. Other staff members may be asked by the Superintendent or Public Information Officer to speak to the media on a case-by-case basis. The district shall not release information which is private or confidential as identified by law and board policy or administrative regulation.

During a disturbance or crisis situation, the first priority of school staff is to address the situation. Media inquiries shall be routed to the Public Information Officer, who shall prepare an official statement, update the statement as events unfold, and keep staff and students well informed.

In the interest of student safety, all visitors, including media representatives, shall register with the school office, immediately upon entering any school building or school grounds when school is in session. While on school property, media representatives shall be accompanied by a school staff member, and shall not be entitled to enter any class which is in session without the express permission of the school site administrator or designee thereof. If at any time it reasonably appears to the site administrator or designee that the presence or actions of the media representative have interfered or are likely to interfere or disrupt the educational activities of the school, the media representative may be required to leave the campus.

The district shall not impose restraints on students' right to speak freely with media representatives at times which do not disrupt the educational program. At their discretion, parents/guardians may instruct their children not to communicate with media representatives.
