SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS
A.
Purpose and Scope
1.
A
list of teachers with a regular certificated credential or who qualify for an
emergency credential, and approved by the Board of Education, will be
maintained by the Personnel Division to substitute for teachers absent from
duty.
2.
Substitute
teachers are appointed by recommendation of the personnel officer through the
superintendent and approval by the Board of Education.
3.
Such
appointments may not result in immediate assignment but authorize eligibility
for employment if and when assigned by the personnel officer as the
superintendent's designee.
B.
General
Substitute
teachers are designated as day-to-day substitutes or long-term substitutes.

Procedure
1.
All
teachers desiring to serve as substitute teachers, including those applying for
regular teaching positions, must make written application to the personnel
officer and furnish all information required.
2.
The
substitute teachers are only assigned by the Personnel Office except during an
emergency.
3.
The
teacher substituting performs all the duties of the absent regular teacher
unless excused from some of the duties by the principal.
4.
The
day-to-day substitute teacher shall arrive at school promptly and attend all
meetings, when assigned, as a substitute for the absent regular teachers.
5.
The
day-to-day substitute who works more than 10 consecutive days in the same
assignment shall receive a higher daily salary rate, beginning on the eleventh
day of service. The substitute's long-term pay rate will become retroactive to
the first day in the same assignment after the eleventh day.
6.
Teachers
substituting for a regular employee shall serve full or partial day and shall
be paid the salary rate approved by the Board of Education.
7.
The
partial day substitute teachers on the secondary level will be paid by the
period. The rate paid per period is derived by dividing the daily rate of seven
periods in the middle schools and six periods in the high schools. The partial
day secondary teacher substituting shall be paid for the teacher's conference
period except when the conference period immediately precedes or follows their
assignment.

The
elementary school substitute shall serve full or half-day and the

continuation school has two sessions. Teaching one session is a half-day
assignment. Any periods taught over the session is a
full day.
