TUBERCULOSIS EXAMINATION

 

A.      Purpose and Scope

To set forth regulations and procedures regarding initial and periodic tuberculosis examinations

B.     General

1.      Except as provided in #8, no person shall be initially employed in a certificated or classified position unless the person has submitted to an examination within the past 60 days to determine that he or she is free of active tuberculosis.

2.      The examination shall consist of an x-ray of the lungs, or an approved intradermal tuberculin test, which, if positive, shall be followed by an x-ray of the lungs.

3.      The district may exempt, for a period not to exceed 60 days following termination of the pregnancy, a pregnant employee from the requirement that a positive intradermal tuberculin test be followed by an x-ray of the lungs.

4.      The expense of the examination as a condition of initial employment shall be borne by the applicant. However, the expense of the periodic examinations thereafter shall be borne by the district in accordance with the procedures set forth below.

5.      All employees shall be required to undergo the periodic examination at least once ever four years or more often if directed by the governing board upon recommendation of the local health officer.

6.      After each examination, the employee shall cause to be on file with the Assistant Superintendent, Personnel Services, a proper certificate showing the employee to have been examined and found free from active tuberculosis.

7.      At the discretion of the governing board this policy shall not apply to classified employees who are employed for any period of time less than a school year whose functions do not require frequent or prolonged contact with pupils.

8.      A person who transfers their employment from another school or school district shall be deemed to meet the requirements of this policy if such person can produce a proper certificate which shows that he or she was examined within the past four years and was found to be free of communicable tuberculosis, or if it is verified by the previous school or school district that it has such a certificate on file.

D.     Procedures

1.      Employees will be given the opportunity during each fiscal year to take advantage of the district established Tuberculin Testing Services which shall be run by qualified personnel according to written standardized procedures as defined in the Business and Professions Code - Nurse Practice Act.

2.      Other specified facilities and reimbursement levels will be established by the district.

3.      Employees using facilities or services other than those specified or provided by the district shall do so at their own expense.

E.     Reports Required

1.      Proper certification showing the employee was examined and found free from active tuberculosis

2.      Proper receipts for fees paid to specified facilities
