ACCOUNTABILITY FOR ABSENT STUDENTS

 

A.      Purpose and Scope

1.      To state the requirements for each district school to know the physical location of each student (K-12) when he or she is absent during school hours

2.      To define the procedure for each district school to assure such physical accountability for absent students

B.     General

1.      Each district school shall make every effort to know the physical whereabouts of every student absent during school hours.

2.      The assistance of parents, students, and other community agencies shall be actively sought in this effort.

3.      The principal of each district school is responsible for the implementation of this procedure.

D.     Procedure

1.      Letter to Parents/Guardians:

a.      Annually--at registration for new students in the Back to School Packet and on the first day of school for every student--a letter to the parents/guardians will be sent home stating our notification of absence requirements and requesting their assistance in this matter.

b.      The letter should read substantially as shown in Exhibit A to this regulation.

c.      The letter should be available and sent in Spanish translation whenever required.

2.      Notification of Absence Log

a.      Each school is to maintain a log of the telephone notifications of student absences to compare with its own roll counts.

3.      Follow-up on Absences When No Notification is Received

a.      When a student is absent with no notification, the school is to make every effort to contact the parents/ guardians or other interested party by telephone, calling the numbers shown on the student's EMERGENCY INFORMATION CARD in the following order:

1st  -  the student's home

2nd  -  the parent's business or place of employment

3rd  -  the neighbor(s) or relative(s) listed

b.      The school will give priority to calling primary-age students and/or students who walk to school.
