CREDIT BY EXAMINATION

 

A.      Purpose and Scope

To outline procedures for students and staff who seek to challenge a course to receive credit by examination

B.     General

1.      The implementation of this regulation is the responsibility of the site administrator.

2.      The determination of which courses are appropriate for challenge by examination is a site responsibility with approval of the Assistant Superintendent - Educational Services. Generally, courses requiring significant laboratory experiences shall not be approved for challenge by examination.

3.      Only identified high school courses may be challenged for credit by examination.

D.     Procedure

1.      The site administrator, in cooperation with the various departments of the school, shall approve courses which may be challenged for credit by examination forward to the Assistant Superintendent - Educational Services, for final approval.

2.      The "Petition to Challenge a Course for Credit by Examination" must be completed and filed with the Assistant Principal, Instruction.

3.      No student may challenge a course in which he/she is currently enrolled.

4.      The student must achieve an "A" or "B" grade on the examination in order to be awarded credit. The grading standard shall be established by the department and shall be as consistent as possible with regular standards.

5.      No student may receive more than 10 units of credit through the credit by examination process.

6.      No student may challenge a course for credit by examination more than once.

7.      Teachers are not responsible for teaching the course of study in the challenge situation. Teachers are responsible only for arranging for the issue of textbooks and for administration of the examination. All learning and preparation is the responsibility of the student.

8.      Examination dates and times must be met by the student. All textbooks and any other materials must be returned at the time of the examination.

9.      The teacher(s) responsible for the administration of the examination shall notify the Assistant Principal, Instruction of the results of the examination within two (2) school days after the examination.

10.  If the student passes the examination at the required level of proficiency, the course, grade, and units for credit shall be entered on the student's official transcript. If the student does not pass at the required proficiency, no entry shall be made on the official transcript.

11.  The completed "Petition to Challenge a Course for Credit by Examination" form shall be filed in the student's cumulative record and in the office of the Assistant Superintendent - Educational Services.
