GRADING

An important responsibility of the teaching staff is the evaluation of student progress. This evaluation must be timely, comprehensible, and accurate. Periodic reporting of this student progress to the parent/guardian constitutes a highly significant and regular form of communication between the home and school. Regular reporting will be accomplished on schedules and by means established in administrative regulations and district calendars. Established means and schedules are considered minimal, and the professional staff is encouraged to create and implement additional communications regarding student progress as the staff deems appropriate.

Fair, consistent, reasonable standards and processes using multiple means of assessment should be established and implemented as the basis for determining grades. These standards and processes should be communicated to, and understood by all, parties-- teachers, students, parents, administrators, and counselors.

Whenever it becomes evident that the student is not making satisfactory progress, is failing, or is in danger of failing, the teacher shall notify the parent/guardian. Every effort must be made to provide such notification in sufficient time to allow the student the opportunity to improve the grade prior to the issuance of the next regular grade report. Notification may be by personal contact, telephone, or written communication. A failing grade may not be assigned at a regular grading period unless such a previous notification to the parent/guardian has been made. The failure of the parent/guardian to respond to this notification shall not preclude the issuance of a failing grade. For any non-computerized notification, staff members should maintain a copy or record of the means and date of such notification.

The grade assigned to each pupil in any course shall be issued by the teacher. The determination of the grade by the teacher, in the absence of clerical or mechanical mistake, fraud, bad faith, or incompetency, shall be final. Any appeal to change a grade may be made only on the basis of the listed exceptions.

Within the provisions of law and this policy, school principals may establish further guidelines for grading and the reporting of pupil progress.
