EARTHQUAKES

 

A.      Purpose and Scope

To establish general earthquake safety procedures

B.     General

1.      Each principal shall develop a site-specific plan for responding to the effects of an earthquake.

2.      Discretion should be used by the principal in determining when to employ these measures.

3.      The principal shall ensure that all students and staff are aware of the elements of the plan and the role each plays.

D.     Procedure

1.      As in any emergency, in the event of an earthquake, the first priority is to maintain calm and treat any injuries.

2.      At the first sign of an earthquake, students should be instructed to "duck, cover, and hold".

3.      After the shaking stops, the teacher should conduct an orderly evacuation to a safe, predetermined location.

4.      Once out of the school buildings, no one should be allowed to re-enter without the principal's permission.

5.      The principal should implement the appropriate elements of the school's Emergency Response Plan.

6.      All gas, water and electric lines should be shut off.

7.      The superintendent's office should be notified of any damage and/or injuries as soon as possible.

8.      The superintendent's office will inform the schools of action to be taken.

9.      All students should be closely supervised and remain at school until notice from the superintendent's office.
