CONTRACTED STUDIES

 

A.      Purpose and Scope

To provide procedures for administering contracted studies

B.     General

1.      This policy and procedure applies to students in grades 9-12.

2.      Instruction is contingent upon an approved Contracted Study Agreement completed by the student, parent/guardian, supervising certificated staff member, counselor, and appropriate administrator prior to the beginning of the semester for which credit is to be given.

3.      The supervising certificated staff member must hold a valid California teaching credential authorizing teaching of the specific course of study.

4.      The participation of the supervising certificated staff member is voluntary. The schools and the district will not incur costs or liabilities in providing for such studies. An employee may not be privately paid for such instructional supervision.

5.      Contracted Study is a self-study procedure monitored by a qualified certificated supervisor and meeting all requirements of the approved course of study. In the contract process, evaluation standards and procedures must be established which would be equivalent to regular classroom instruction.

6.      No student may contract for more than five (5) credits a semester with a maximum of ten (10) credits during grade 9-12.

7.      Time spent in Contracted Study is not included in the minurtes of attendance required to constitute a day of attendance.

D.     Procedure

1.      The student must account for not less than ninety (90) hours of study for five (5) credits.

2.      All elements of the approved course of study must be completed and verified by the certificated supervisor.

3.      A detailed list of evaluation processes, dates and time for completing these processes, and standards for evaluation must be attached to Form II when it is submitted on completion of the contract. Criteria for awarding credit and a final grade must be established.

4.      If the district owns necessary study materials, they shall be made available to the student. If necessary materials are not available within the district, their acquisition becomes the responsibility of the student and parent/guardian.

5.      The certificated supervisor shall be responsible for notifying the student, parent/guardian, and counselor or appropriate administrator if the contracted study agreement is not being fulfilled and/or if appropriate progress is not being made. The certificated supervisor may terminate the agreement at anytime during the semester if either condition exists.

6.      The certificated supervisor is responsible for making the final determination on awarding credit and grade in accordance with the contents of policy and this regulation.

7.      The Final Verification-Contracted Study Form II must be submitted to the designated school office within ten (10) calendar days after the end of the semester.

8.      The counselor and/or appropriate administrator will file forms and make appropriate entries in the cumulative record and/or official transcript.

E.     Reports Required

Periodic summary reports relating to the implementation of this policy and administrative regulation may be required by the Assistant Superintendent - Educational Services.

F.      Record Retention and Destruction

1.      Application for Contracted Study Form I to be filed in pupil's cumulative file.

2.      Final Verification-Contracted Study Form II to be filed in pupil's cumulative file.

3.      Appropriate entries in pupil's transcript.

G.     Responsible Administrative Unit

High Schools under the direction of the Educational Services Division.
