OPPORTUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

 

A.      Purpose and Scope

1.      To provide an alternative educational program for students who have attendance and behavior problems

2.      To offer a smaller class which allows increased time with one teacher in grades seven and eight

B.     B  General

1.      Parents shall be responsible for transporting students enrolled in this class.

2.      The class will require an assessment/screening prior to enrollment of students.

3.      Students will return to their home school at the end of the school year unless it is mutually agreed that the student will remain in the Opportunity Program.

4.      Parents must agree to support all the commitments required of the students.

C.     Procedures

1.      Students who are in seventh or eighth grade may be considered for the opportunity class.

2.      Students shall be assigned to the opportunity class/program only upon the recommendation of a school committee which includes at least the following:

a.      A district representative who is familiar with the student's progress.

b.      A representative of the opportunity class/program.

c.      The student's parent/guardian, at the parent/guardian's option.

d.      Middle School Administrators.

3.      The parent/guardian may designate a representative such as a counselor, social worker, or other community member to attend the committee meeting.

4.      Parents must understand and support the philosophy of the opportunity class and must make time to sit in on the class upon request as a behavior modification technique for their student.

5.      Students will be enrolled on a space availability basis.

6.      Factors to be considered in student eligibility include the following:

a.      Failing grades in at least three major academic subjects.

b.      Consistent behavior problems.

c.      Excessive tardies and/or absences.

7.      If the student does not attend on a regular basis, he/she will be referred to the District Student Study Team.

8.      If the student and parents do not actively participate in the program, the student will be sent back to his/her home school or be referred to the District Student Study Team.

9.      If no room exists when the student is referred, he/she will be put on a waiting list.
