D.     Procedures

1.      The district will provide notification to parents prior to the beginning of the school year relating to the right of a student to refuse or refrain from participation in activities that may be considered as the harmful and destructive use of animals. This will be part of a general notification of rights.

2.      Each teacher providing instruction which utilizes live or dead animals or animal parts must inform the students of their rights.

3.      Students who wish to exercise their rights to be excluded from such activities have the responsibility to notify the teacher and such objection must be substantiated by written notice from the parent/guardian.

4.      Teachers are urged to provide an alternate method of obtaining the knowledge, information, or experience. Such alternatives might include, but not be limited to, the use of video tapes, models, films, books, and computer software. Alternate projects may require only comparable time and effort. Teachers shall not be arbitrary or capricious in determining whether a pupil may pursue an alternative project.

5.      Teachers shall not discriminate against students exercising their rights in this matter.

6.      If no alternative is provided, the student shall be excused from the project without penalty.

7.      Pupils refraining from such activities as dissection, are still expected to pass all examinations of the respective course of study. If the examination requires what may be considered the harmful or destructive use of animals a pupil again may refrain, seek an alternative, or be excused without penalty.
