SCHOOL/CLASSROOM VISITATIONS

 

A.      Purpose and Scope

To provide guidance and direction for principals and/or other administrative personnel regarding school/classroom visitation by parents and other citizens

B.     General

1.      Principals and/or other administrative personnel shall consult with teachers in scheduling and conducting classroom visitations.

2.      The authority for approval or denial of visitation requests rests with the principal or other unit administrator or designee.

3.      Suggestions or concerns relating to this policy and regulation should be directed to the Assistant Superintendent - Educational Services.

D.     Procedure

1.      Campus Visitation

a.      All visitors must report to the Principal's Office to request permission to be on the school campus during the school day. No one may be on the campus without such permission.

b.      No one shall have access to a student except school employees, officially registered volunteers performing prescribed functions, and the student's parent/guardian. Interference or other non-approved interaction with a student by anyone other than those indicated above constitutes a disruption of the school program.

c.      Specific reasons for campus visitation shall be identified by the principal.

d.      Campus visitation shall be limited to a specific area(s) of the campus and for specific times.

e.      Because school employees are responsible for students and the school program, visitors must be under the supervision and/or observation of a designated school employee.

f.        Visitations on campus shall not interfere with any employee's performance of assigned duties and functions.

g.      Visitations on campus shall not interfere with the educational or other official programs of the school as determined by school personnel.

h.      Visitors shall abide by all statutes, policies, regulations, and rules of the state, district, school, and supervising personnel.

i.         Principals may establish limits on campus visitations when such visitations interfere with the school program or exceed the ability of the staff to supervise.

2.      Classroom Visitation

a.      Requests to visit a classroom shall be made to the school principal at least three (3) days prior to the visits. The principal will ascertain the purpose of such visits. The principal may require such requests to be made in writing.

b.      The request to visit a classroom shall be reviewed by the principal with the teacher prior to the decision to authorize or deny the visit. Visitations shall be scheduled to minimize disruption to classroom activities taking into consideration the needs of the school, the teacher, the parent and the student.

c.      If a request to visit a classroom cannot be accommodated, the person making the request shall be notified with the reason for denial. An attempt should be made to provide an acceptable alternative.

d.      Whenever a teacher reasonably believes that a classroom visitation has been unduly disruptive, or a violation of Education Code 44810 and 44811 has been made, the teacher shall report the disruption to the site administrator who shall investigate the matter and take appropriate action.

e.      The number and frequency of visits shall be determined by the principal after review with the teacher.

f.        Priority for classroom visits shall be:

1)      parents of students currently in the class

2)      parents of students who my be eligible for enrollment in the immediate future, and

3)      members of the public on escorted tour of the facility.

g.      Parent/teacher conferences will be scheduled outside of class time and not during classroom visitations.

h.      Visitors shall abide by all rules and procedures established by the principal and teachers.

i.         Statutory limitations regarding the use of electronic listening/recording devices in any classroom without prior approval of the teacher and principal will not be used (ED 5152).
